Johnnyswim and Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors: Goodbye Road
I clicked over to a Spotify playlist that featured a lot of songs I listened to in 2022… and I was surprised. It’s less than a year ago, but I was reminded of several bands (and songs) that I really was listening to a lot… that I’d completely forgotten about.
Case in point: the album “Goodbye Road” by Johnnyswim and Dew Holcomb and the Neighbors. I mentioned their song Ring the Bells previously, but the title song from this album deserves a little love – and a listen.
I’ll admit: the whiskey line got me initially. And the rhyme of adventure/seltzer was a nice touch.
She spent years trading my whiskey out for seltzer
Still I hear her voice in the pit of my failure
I ride alone down Goodbye Road
My favorite part of the song though, happens towards the end. I’m not sure the proper term for it. Bridge? The moment kicks in at 2:38 with the line “Travelin’ Paul on the road to Damascus.”
It’s a lovely moment, and I’m betting it sounds fantastic live.
Speaking of which, I don’t know if I’ve shared this habit of mine: when I lock onto a song I like, I tend to drift over to YouTube to find live versions of the song. And sometimes covers. I’m always in awe of musicians who sound just as good, if not better, live. And both Johnnyswim and Dew Holcomb and the Neighbors are very, very good live.
