Repairing the Back Deck, Day 3
Liz, working on freeing some deck boards by cutting through some nails.
The kids got more involved today, with Kirt and Liz showing everyone how to work the chop saw.
A belated birthday cake, for Liz’s birthday.
Liz, showing off that she has knife skills in addition to her multitool skills.
More new boards down.
Deck is looking really good.
Working up to a fairly unstable area.
Audrey and Sebastian, helping to install some deck boards. For posterity, I want to call out Sebastian’s choice of footwear here.
Audrey, throwing in some deck screws to install some new boards.
In the far corner, just underneath the deck, there was a nest of young birds. And of course, both Liz and Audrey were very concerned about their well being during our construction.
A group of little guys, tucked into a corner.
Full house is an understatement.
As we were removing the old boards, Liz and Audrey took great pains to ensure that nothing fell down or disturbed the nest.
Worth noting that Liz also set up some cushions and a “catch area” in the back porch area on the ground floor. In case the birds got spooked and decided to try to jump out.
Looking good.
Liz, with three open beers… waiting for the party to start.
Look at all those new boards!
Kirt, ever motivated to do all he can… pulled a few doors from the house and used a planer to trim things down. Several of these doors would “stick” when opened, and he got them opening and closing quite easily, as a result.
The “catch area,” under the porch.
The aftermath, of all our demo and install.
A whole lot of piles of wood. Most of these were cut down to below 8′, and will eventually get throw into a Bagster bag. But that’s a task for another day.
A newly replaced back deck.
Looking good and solid.
While there are some areas that could use some smoothing, everything feels incredibly solid.
I can’t tell you how good it felt, walking back and forth across this deck.
Amazed at all the material we used. And amazed at how much progress we made, over three days.
Looking down from the main bedroom. That’s a nice looking deck.
