Franklin Room: Scotch Malt Whisky Society, September 2024 Outturn

After being away for a few months, we finally were back in Chicago for a Society tasting.

Tonight, Katie and Tim joined us for the event – which just added to the fun. It’s been a minute, and we got to see a lot of faces we haven’t seen for a good while.

Liz and I were among the first to arrive. And were greeted with a few extra bottles from Elhan, who offered them up as an appetizer before the actual testing.

A view of the main tables. Instead of sitting in a booth (which we did back in February), Liz and I wanted to get a bit more into the fray. So we grabbed some spots on the main floor.

Of particular note: as we were sitting down, one of the veterans (Michael)… shouted out that he wanted to sit next to Liz, because “she gets everything right.” He was referring to one of the prior events (the March outturn), where Liz was really spot-on with a lot of her predictions (the tasting involves trying to guess the age, distillery, casks used, and ABV for each dram).

Liz laughed off Michael’s comment, but I know she was secretly proud of the call-out. Particularly from someone who’s been a long time Society member (and also one of the core folks from the Drammers Chicago chapter).

A bit more trivia/history to record: our friend Max correctly guessed for one of the drams that it involved a second cask (and that it was a rum cask). Really impressive call, and something I just wanted to note for the record.

For myself: I was able to correctly guess Highland Park for one of the drams, and got the casks partially correct. It was an incredibly subtle peat/sherry combo, and I guessed that it was a sherry cask (turned out to be a double maturation, with two sherry casks). Still, I was pretty proud of the fact that I got fairly close on my guess.
