Baby Squirrels
A few days ago, my neighbor Connie texted me to let me know that she spotted a dead squirrel that was in my front yard. On hearing this… I went out, and found the poor little guy… who was kind of half-hidden by our plants.
Not really sure what happened – maybe the squirrel just fell? But I cleaned things up, and didn’t think too much about it.
A recent development for us at the house: tiny yelps/calls, coming from the outside. After a day or so, we pieced it together that the sound we were hearing was actually coming from a squirrel on our roof.
Looking around outside, we spotted a small, tiny squirrel. And our theory was that this was a baby squirrel, and the mom was the squirrel I “cleaned up” from the front yard. And the cries we’d been hearing, was this squirrel calling out for their mom.
A little later, we amended our theory: there were two baby squirrels, both of them calling out for their mom.
Liz was concerned, and tried to leave some nuts out on our upstairs balcony (but we got no takers). The calling continued for a few days, but then abruptly stopped. We were concerned that the squirrels were too young, and unable to fend for themselves… but our best guess is that they stopped calling out, and eventually ventured forth into the world.
