John Mayer: In the Blood
Not sure when I came across this song, but I’ve started to loop it just a little bit, recently.
I know John Mayer for his more popular hits, but don’t really know a lot of his work. Most of what I know is from the radio, eons ago (back when I actually listened to the radio).
I like the lyrics fine, and the tune is pretty catchy all in all. But what stood out for me is that this song seems a little lower in register, and seems to be a perfect song for anyone who’s a baritone (which is me).
Usually, the songs I like tend to be sung by tenors. And as much as I wish and hope that I could one day hit those notes, I’m very much in a lower range. And very much a baritone.
How much of my love will be insane to some degree?
And what about this feeling that I’m never good enough?
Will it wash out in the water, or is it always in the blood?
The song is an interesting exploration of family. I wonder if I like it more because I can comfortable sing all the lyrics, without too much strain.
Side note: the song repeats a lot of the same note (A) as part of the refrain (“wash out in the water”). Kind of interesting to hear a song that hits a lot of the same notes so close to one another, repeatedly.
