Snowy Travel Day

Liz and I had big plans today, waking up early to close up the house, pack up our things, and head to Michigan.

We got going fairly early, and were out the door by around 9AM or so. While we both saw that some snow was in the forecast, neither of us had prepared for the amount of snow that we saw coming down (and sticking on the ground).

We decided to stop at Plein Air Cafe for breakfast, and found that a lot of the nearby parking spots were all taken up. We normally come here on the weekends, when there are fewer students around. But today, the streets were all jam packed. We ended up needing to park several blocks away.

On the way back to our car, I spotted this on the car next to us. Even though the snow covered most everything up, they still got tagged for not paying in a pay zone. Rough.

On our way out of the city, the highway was just wretched. We did maybe 35 mph for a good while, with everyone incredibly cautious on the road. Our car slipped a few times, but never quite got out of control.

As we made our way through Indiana and then Michigan, the roads started to improve. There was less snow on the ground, and eventually we were able to drive at normal highway speeds once more. But that first hour or so outside of Chicago? So slow. So rough.

At a rest stop in Michigan, we encountered this warning sign. It made me hungry and terrified at the same time.
