Adding Insulation in the Front Office
Finally, after a long while, Liz and I had a shared house day together. We slept in, had a lazy morning, and then suited up to work on the front office.
We’ve got several batts of soundproof insulation, just waiting to be put in. And with the work I did previously, we were a bit closer to install.
One thing I forgot: Liz reminded me that we had several other joists that were “open,” and didn’t have any drywall/plaster between the joists.
These sections were closer to the NW corner of the room, but spanned 2-3 joists.
Rather than repeat what I had done (fully covering the joist spaces), we opted to go with some supporting strips instead. These would be 48″ x 4″ bits of thin plywood, that we would affix to the underside of each joist. A slight space for the insulation to rest on.
Liz, cutting and prepping insulation pieces.
Liz, working on installing one of the first strips (using our fancy right angle adapter).
Action shot of me, trying to get in under the insulation and floor joists.
Getting in under there required a lot of contortions, and some weird hand-swapping. Also, I’m pretty sure I inhaled a few grams of fiber glass and sawdust.
A few strips, set up.
Insulation installed.
It’s hard to see, but Liz and I got a 4×8 plywood sheet against the far corner and screwed it down. There’s a second board there in this photo, but the one underneath is pretty locked in.
It felt like both a long and short session, today. We made a lot of quick progress, and were in a spot where we were debating pushing forward or calling it (this was circa 5PM). I’m glad to see we called it, and decided on an early night.
Today, we got past the most difficult bit of the floor insulation, and the remaining work should be pretty quick.
Next steps: get some plywood down all across the room, and start back up on the soundproof insulation. We’ve got a lot of work to do yet, but a lot of that work is known/familiar to us.
Felt nice to be back in the swing of things again.
