Scotch Malt Whisky Society, December 2024 Outturn

New venue tonight, for the SMWS tasting! Over the last few months, the times have shifted over at the Franklin Room (from Mondays to Sundays), and the attendance has dropped a bit.

Tonight, we’re gathering at the local Birch Road Clubhouse, where we’ve been for a few previous Drammers events. But it looks like this is going to be our new venue, moving forward.

A cozy table area, where Liz and I pulled up our chairs. We met up with both Lauren and Max, two regulars that we’ve hung out with at previous tastings. And the fours of us sidled up at the same space.

A view of the space, with folks settling in before the event.

In the middle – several additional bottles that were brought along, for sharing.

Liz and I brought a recent find: a bottle by Gordon Daniels, an independent bottler that ages whisky in PX casks, and finishes them in Champagne Barriques.

I’d been eye-ing this on the shelves for a while, and we recently pulled the trigger on the bottle. The bottle we got was from Benriach, and was incredibly smooth and drinkable for being only 10 years old. An immense amount of carmel flavor, and something we were excited to bring to share.

Our bottle was a better opener, since nearly everything else tonight was cask strength (ours was 46% ABV).

As per usual, Lauren showed up with some killer bottles. I’m just floored at the stuff he pulls out, and offers freely to everyone in attendance. Incredibly generous, and some eye-opening bottles to just see on the table.

A 21 year Macallan, from Gordon & MacPhail.

A Signatory 18 year, 1st fill Oloroso. I’m not recalling the distillery, and may need to see if Liz remembers.

As you can imagine, ours was quite the popular area after the tasting. It was lovely to see Lauren and Max again, and we met a ton of new Society members.

Generally the crowds tend to be the same folks, off and on. But there were an awful lot of new faces tonight. We stayed for a while after the event, and got to chatting with a lot of new people. Looking forward to the next event.
