I have to confess – the first time I pressed the switch and saw this working, I started giggling uncontrollably. This is all fairly rudimentary electronics wiring, but I continue to feel lucky every time things just work – and also lucky that my components aren’t exploding in a small burst of flame and smoke.
The hope is to turn this into a sort of staging area, for when we get to the windows. So with some timing and luck, we’ll likely be transforming this room again in a few weeks. But for now, things look a bit more normal.
Bob always has a few tricks up his sleeve, but I found this particular install impressive. He’s helping put in the exterior siding to the area under the kitchen (where we will eventually store a lot of outdoor supplies, and our garbage bins).
We’ve been using the space under the kitchen as a very makeshift storage area, and a lot of “stuff” as just wound up underneath there. Today, I cleared most of it out in anticipation of some additional work happening soon (putting up some siding, and adding doors).
Went outside today, and was delighted to see this fun bit of Halloween decoration up already. We’ve got some new neighbors in the building next door, and I’m fairly certain this was by them.
Today, a first – came down to see Hugo, standing on the top floor. He and I looked at one another, and we were both pretty confused.
It’s odd to say, but I found these videos… relaxing? It’s not so much watching someone work as it is watching someone who is skilled at work.
I have to say – seeing the lights come up was a delightful experience. It was exciting to see things working, and also exciting to not see my Arduino go up in a puff of smoke due to misconfiguration or faulty wiring.
Liz has continued the bonding sessions with them, but has slowly progressed to where she’s no longer sitting and monitoring them both. The two have been in the same space for a few hours at a stretch, and Liz felt it was time for them to be around one another, 100%.
Putting plywood up means we won’t have as much air going into the basement. And also allows for certain four-legged friends to be near the space, without fear that they might tumble down into the basement.
Not a very sexy project. But a small step towards making the first floor a little more normal.
Today, both Liz and I had our separate projects, with both of us working with long lengths of boards.
I’ve been out the last few nights after work, trying to lay down a few deck boards before the light disappears. It’s been a bit slow going, as I’m fitting one piece… and then measuring the next, and then cutting the length I need.

Wrapped up in old blues
We can’t afford to call
No, we don’t know where we are”
Every year, I’m reminded of the changing of the seasons when I see the leaves change on my neighbor’s tree. The transition is a striking one – leaves shifting from green to red, a slow announcement that Fall is arriving.
