Rabbits and Brussels Sprouts

Over the weekend, we picked up a stalk of brussles sprouts at the Logan Square Farmers Market. It’s one of our favorite veggies, and sometimes seeing them on the stalk just makes it hard to resist.

Yesterday, Liz got a bunny IQ treat ball for our rabbits, Baxter and Quincy.
In the bottom of the ball, you place a bunch of treats. There’s a middle partition that has an adjustable opening (kind of like a “difficulty” setting), and then a final opening on the outer covering. With the toy positioned correctly, treats should fall out.
Last week, I noticed there were several phone books lined up outside our front door. As we were heading to work, Liz turned to me and said “Don’t forget to bring one upstairs, when you get home.”
At first, I was taken aback. Why would we need a phone book? It’s not like we ever use them. Maybe she wanted me to bring one upstairs so that we could help eliminate the mess at our doorstep? So we could recycle it?
Going over oldphotos, I happened across a few shots of our rabbits shortly after we set up the sunroom for them. Baxter (in the foreground) and Quincy, hovering around one of the willowballs they love so much. Quincy, who kind of looks like a sleepy old man here, sipping on his tea. On Friday, Liz and I took a stroll down the boulevard and walked to Provenance. We wanted to get out and enjoy the nice weather, and to pick up a bottle of wine.
It’s a short trek from our place to California and Logan, and en route… we saw a ton of bunny rabbits. Literally one per block.
Today Liz and I cleaned up the sunroom (where our rabbits Baxter and Quincy live). We kept the buns outside, and cleaned the room top to bottom – picking up the old tiles we had on the ground, sweeping and giving every surface a good clean.
Tonight, Liz and I weighed Quincy again using our very accurate, very scientific approach.
Looking over the notes from our vet, we wanted to see if Quincy had gained any weight recently. To do this, we figured the best way would be to use our kitchen’s digital scale. Additionally, we sprinkled a bit of dry food inside as enticement.
They were fairly calm, though I’m not 100% if they’re simply dazed by being in this position. A few years ago, when Liz would trim Baxter’s nails and go through this whole process… Baxter held a grudge. For a few days afterwards, Baxter would keep her distance and would refuse to come near Liz.
So this is what our night looked like last night. Let me explain. We’ve been giving Quincy a lot of medication lately. Thankfully though, we no longer have to deal with any injections, which were an incredibly stressful, daily thing for a while. Liz and I usually take turns, feeding the buns their medication. Baxter has one thing to take,…
Last week Liz bought some new toys for the bunny rabbits. This one is from a line that’s marketed as “Bunny IQ toys,” which are designed as puzzles with hidden rewards. Underneath each of the round balls is a small space, where treats are placed. In order to get to them, the balls need to be bumped out of the…
We dropped off Quincy at the vet earlier this week, due to his infection and liver levels not really improving very much. He ended up getting an ultrasound and he’s now on even more medication. We’re still working on tackling the infection that he has, but we’ve also since found out that he’s got heart disease. Some of the medication…
After a recent visit to the vet, Liz and I found out that our rabbits needed a bit more medication, day to day. Quincy has some liver issues (high liver levels, which suggest an infection), and was also diagnosed as being anemic. Baxter was developing some mats of fur under her chin, and the doctor suggested some pain medication (thinking…
At work today, we had a special visitor: Iggy the Bunny (whose parents are Justin S and Alexis). Deb was in town, and apparently… she asked for a visit. Throughout the entire work day, Iggy was camped out in Deb’s office (water dish, litter box and all). Closeup of Iggy the Bunny. I was amazed that Justin was able to…
Tonight, we dropped off Baxter and Quincy… to be looked after by Liz Rench. We’re heading out of town for a few days, and so hired Liz to look after the bunnies while we were gone. Unlike cats, bunnies need a lot more daily maintenance. They need to be fed twice a day, which means cutting up fresh greens in…
