A very interesting photo gallery of notorious Chicago criminals and crime scenes, courtesy of the Chicago Tribune. Pictured above is John Dillinger sitting in a Crown Point, Indiana courtroom in February of 1934. A few weeks later, on March 3rd, he would escape jail using a fake gun.

I lost a lot of time this weekend (and I mean a lot of time) to SimCity 2013. I was never very good at the game, but playing it again now so many years later… the same little attention to details sucked me in. I never know how much I liked simulations like this, as it’s one part terrarium and one part god complex, I suppose.

Walking to work yesterday, I spotted a guy standing in the middle of the intersection at State and Madison. Traffic was spilling all around him, but he slowly and methodically made his way across the busy intersection, spray painting the same symbol every few feet.

On Friday at work, I found out that the city was trying out something called a Pedestrian Scramble near where I used to work, over at State and Jackson. Given how close I was, I figured I’d stop over on my lunch break and try to document the very interesting new approach to handling car and foot traffic, on a pretty busy intersection.

After finding some fantastic, old images of the Art Institute last year, I recently dug around Chicago Past and found a few photos near my current workplace.

It’s funny how nonchalant I became, in regards to turbulence. I still got a bit nervous, but was much better on the ride home than I normally am. With all the ups and downs with the ship, it made turbulence seem like less of a worry. After a week’s worth of ocean blue, we arrived home to a rather brown and drab Chicago. Even though there was a dramatic color change… it felt good to be arriving home, and to be back on familiar ground once more.

For those not familiar with the backstory, the book is all about WKQX – Q101 Chicago, a station that saw the rise of Alternative during the 90’s and early 2000’s. James has been planning this book for a long while, and launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2011, attracting over 350 backers who pledged nearly $15,000 to make the book happen.

We got up pretty early this morning, making our way downtown at around 6:00 AM. Liz was going to meet her friend Meg at Buckingham Fountain around 6:40 AM. Though we made it downtown in decent time, we got stuck a bit, trying to get into the underground garages on Michigan. When it got closer to 6:30 AM, Liz hopped out of the car and went off to meet her running partner.

As a quick overview: The Color Run is a national charity event, where participants run/walk a 5K and get doused in colorful powder along the way. Most participants don white clothing, and by the time they finish… they’re a brilliant, colorful mess.

For now, here’s a photo of me at the end of the event… shortly before I left the main stage and headed to my car. Tomorrow’s recap should be pretty fun.

As Liz and I were walking to work, we didn’t notice how strange the sky looked until we got to Logan/Milwaukee. We had been walking underneath the shading that runs along the boulevard, but when things opened up at Milwaukee… we noticed how odd the sky seemed.

Go away for a week, and it’s surprising what you miss. For the last few days, I’ve been going to work a different way. I’ve been helping Liz document her different outfits for a thing called Me Made May (where participants attempt to wear something they’ve created themselves, for every day of the month).
So in the mornings, rather than me going to get Coffee at State/Monroe, we’ve been walking down Jackson. A few days ago, to my surprise… I noticed the intersection at State/Monroe was awash with color.

Spotted this on the NW corner of Jackson and Clark, downtown Chicago. Assuming it’s something for wintertime, to prevent ice from building up… but in all my years living in the city, this is the first time I’ve seen any kind of sign like this.

You Are Listening To is a site that I heard about, many months ago… and remembered yesterday, out of the clear blue. I had it up for a part of the day, and it’s equal parts calming and unsettling.

About a month ago, I came across a stunning image of the Art Institute via Andrew Huff. The image itself is stunning – the building on its own, with little else visible in the background and Michigan Avenue looking barely more than a simple cobblestone street.
