Final Pass, Cleaning the Kitchen Walls
On Friday, Liz and I made another pass of the kitchen. We cleaned off a lot of the remaining plaster, hauled a lot of bags out in the yard, and removed all the nails we could find.

Today is Liz’s birthday, and I had a full day of excursions scheduled. First off, we hit up The Bongo Room for breakfast. Since we’re now in Hyde Park, we opted for the Roosevelt location instead of Wicker Park (general note: it still fills up super fast). After eating a delicious breakfast and going over some options on where to visit for the day… we headed out to our first stop: Architectural Artifacts.
Since the weather was so nice on Friday, Liz decided on a whim that we should try out Divvy bikes and ride home along the Lakefront Trail.
When she asked for help, I obliged… but not before pulling out my camera and laughing all the while. I lose some points for doing this, but it was too funny not to capture the moment. Liz, as you can see from the photo, is displeased.
One in particular was this massive guy, protruding from our yard and hovering well over in the neighbor’s yard. It’s hard to really do justice to the scale of the thing, but on first seeing it… Liz and I were both concerned regarding the potential damage it might do to the neighbor’s house (and ours).
Saturday was more of the same, with Liz and I working on some of the walls in our kitchen/dining room.
After work on Friday, Liz and I spent the evening working on removing paint and wallpaper from the main hallway.
I took a bath in this stuff.
Julie was kind enough to bring over some home made food for us, which we re-heated in our microwave for dinner. She’d been working on prepping food for us the past day or so, and it was absolutely delicious.
Liz, painting some of the basement joists. We got a coat of paint on here a while ago, but much of it soaked into the wood. This time around, we’re getting better coverage.
Liz, finishing up the final round of varnish on the woodwork in the dining room. After today, we’re ready to move out of this room and onto the others… clearing space for us turning the dining room into our makeshift kitchen, for the next few several months.
In clearing out the rooms, there was a lot of extra “stuff” that Liz and Julie had found when they donned Tyvek suits and cleaned out the attic.
Originally, we were going to resize the bedrooms and make them a bit smaller (but equal). With some additional discussion today, we decided to make the master bedroom a little larger… and to make the adjacent bedroom (the guest bedroom) a little smaller.
Beneath the first layer of tile is… another layer of tile. See that humongo piece of floor that’s broken off and resting against the counter? Liz did that, all on her own.
The bit of bad news: we were unable to track down the source of the leak. Though we saw it initially, the additional exploration ended up revealing very little. To top things off, the water in the tub stopped working completely (when it had been working fine, previously). Not a good sign, especially since we couldn’t identify where the leak originated from in the first place.
