Two Local Putty Tats, Wanted for Questioning

Logan Square – Chicago, IL. At 8:15 AM, local authorities found the body of an unidentified Logan Square male at Logan and Milwaukee. There were no witnesses at the time of discovery. Known around the neighborhood as Tweety, friends and neighbors remember the man’s slight lisp and distinctive voice. He was 68 years old. The victim’s longtime roommate is currently…

Two Birds, Perching on a Bird

Spotted not one but two birds, sitting atop the monument in Logan Square. Everytime I see a bird perched on this thing, I view it as a good omen. I’m not sure why, but it just makes me smile everytime it happens. I’m now up to two birds at the same time. Next up: three birds. Related:Bird on a Bird

Heading to Work, Heading Home

Spotted this ad near the Logan Blue Line stop on Friday. The frustrated, bearded caveman is really what makes the ad, I think. On the way home. In the past week or so, when the sun is setting… it illuminates the sidewalk on my way home. The sunlight hits me from behind, and I see an incredibly elongated version of…

The Logan Square Lane Puzzle

Last weekend, Liz and I were driving around Logan Square and came upon a realization. There’s this particularly tricky spot at the intersection of Logan and Milwaukee, when you’re headed East on Logan. Liz and I both had very different ideas of what lane was supposed to go where. First, here’s a quick peek at what the view looks like:…

Late Snowfall, Walking Home

Today, starting around the late afternoon, we began getting a good amount of thick, thick snowfall. While I wasn’t super crazy about getting even more snow, I have to admit it was quite beautiful. Walking around in the afternoon felt like being inside a very large snowglobe. Even the sound of traffic didn’t spoil how serene it felt. As people…

Muffin Lady Street Art

Spotted this on the wall in the alley near Lula Cafe. I feel like I somewhat recognize the artist, but can’t quite put a name to it. Maybe Ben knows who this is. I can only assume the reference is to Shirley, who was better known as the Muffin Lady around Bucktown and Wicker Park, around 5 years ago. If…

Chicago Blizzard 2011: Aftermath

I was up super early this morning, and headed to the gym around 6AM. While I did shovel out my spot yesterday, I didn’t go so far as to claim dibs on the space by putting a chair or two to save it. I did it briefly, when I first moved to Chicago… but haven’t really done it ever since….

Chicago Blizzard 2011, Day 2: Afternoon

Since we’re working from home today, Chris chatted with me on IM to ask if I wanted to meet up at Longman & Eagle for lunch. It was a short trek (despite the snow), and so Liz and I bundled up and made our way out around noon. A few smaller side streets had been cleared, but after the mid-morning…

Chicago Blizzard 2011, Day 2: Early Morning

Looking down the alley, I spotted a guy whose car was stuck. Not in a parking spot, not in a garage – the car was stuck right smack in the middle of the alley. From afar, I asked if I could take his photo and he said “Sure.” Then, he told me to wait and climbed up on top of his car with his snow shovel.

Chicago Blizzard 2011, Day 1: Evening

This is Logan Boulevard. See that patch of snow near the bottom of the photo? That’s the curb. I slid off into the street several times because the curb was buried underneath snow. Logan Boulevard is normally four lanes, but cars were only driving in the middle. So while I was walking around… I was inadvertently walking down the street without even knowing it.

Chicago Blizzard 2011, Day 1: Afternoon

It was definitely snowing and gusting a lot more than comes through in these photos. Though there wasn’t a lot of snow on the ground, it definitely was beginning to accumulate… and you could start to see traffic snarling up. Glad we got out of work early, and we were definitely glad to be home.

RIP Tiny Snowmen

Spotted this on my way home from work, last night. Given their configuration, I’m guessing (hoping) these were tiny snowmen, standing guard like tiny gargoyles on the front steps. Related:Tackling a Starbucks SnowmanLove is EverywhereThe Snow Gets EverywhereImages of SnowHuge SnowflakesFirst Snow

Toilet Humor

Spotted this in the alleyway behind our apartment. I thought this was some pretty funny shit. See what I did there? Apparently, LepreCAN Portable Restrooms also has a website. Since it’s likely found at the scene of a lot of construction sites, it seems perfectly symmetrical that their site should also be “under construction.” Related:TiltEye Can See You

Conehead

Spotted this guy on the street right behind our apartment. I was originally going to make some comparison to gargoyles in terms of being some kind of ward or guardian. But it turns out gargoyles actually originated from the process of conveying water away from the sides of buildings (to prevent damage after storms). This reminds me. There are a…

Logan Square Kitchen: Halloween Pastry Market

This weekend, Logan Square Kitchen was holding another pastry market – lots of vendors, lots of good treats (and just in time for Halloween). When we arrived we were greeted at the door by a sausage and a chicken. View of the space (facing away from Milwaukee). On walking in, one of the first tables was from Flour. Everyone had…
