The songs have this mellow feel about them, and it makes me feel like taking a long drive down a country road. The main song I’ve been hooked on, from their album Love Has Come For You, is When You Get to Asheville. It kind of reminds me of Come Back From San Francisco by The Magnetic Fields, in that it’s a love song to someone who’s moved away.

If you can’t tell, I’m a huge fan of Rdio. Even though I never thought I’d find myself buying into a monthly music subscription service, I’m really glad I did. I know a lot of people prefer Spotify, but both services have a free version. I just like the look and feel of Rdio much more.

With last Tuesday’s update of new releases on Rdio, I found myself listening a lot to “Love Letter,” by Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes. I think this song has been around for over a year, but I just now heard the album… and have been playing it a fair amount over the weekend.

It’s a pretty dark song. And I remember discussing this (vaguely) with Ben, about how in the song the paramedics were offering comfort by lying, but the priest was doing just the opposite. Beyond the lyrics and the story though, I just seem to find the melody of this song incredibly attractive.

This is all sorts of nerdy awesomeness: Commander Chris Hadfield performs a modified version of David Bowie’s Space Oddity while aboard the International Space Station. I saw one or two links posting to this video, and figured I’d watch a few seconds and quit. But the backdrop of the ISS (and the views of the Earth) made it simply impossible…

Lately, perhaps due to the uptick in rain, I’ve been listening to A. A. Bondy a lot more. I found him after my friend Brian mentioned him ages ago, and I got enamored with Bondy’s album American Hearts.

This song is much more melodic than a lot of STT songs, but there are aspects of it that remind me why I loved Wedren’s songwriting style so much – the way the vocals seem to wander a little bit, mixing in some dissonance before settling down comfortably into the main tune of the song. Though I haven’t listened to all of his solo work, this one has been my favorite by far.

I recently got to thinking about The Weight, and remembered this old video of Wilco, Nick Lowe and Mavis Staples rehearsing backstage at the Civic Opera House in Chicago.

There was something about the song that made it seem a good Sunday evening track. Liz and I were both working on our computers in the office, and it was a period of quiet and slow productivity. Felt like trying to share the moment.

When shifted into a major key, everything sounds much more upbeat, happier. And the disconnect that happens in your brain is a kind of delightful thing, with you comparing what you’re hearing with the version you remember. The sensation is what I imagine a Prozac-forced smile to feel like.

Been going back to this early Tom Waits album, and fixating on a few songs. This one has been looping more than the others, lately.

I know I’ve posted this already on FB and Twitter, but I find myself re-watching this video and smiling every time. It’s playful, and makes me feel good each time I see it (the guy that shows up at 0:35 and waves always cracks me up).

A delightfully cute (and only slightly gruesome) video about really bad ways to go out. Reminded me a bit of Happy Tree Friends, but leaning a lot heavier on the cuteness.
