Graffiti Love
It’s funny how well I feel I know the alleyways near my apartment. I may not travel it every single day, but I do tend to notice small changes here and there. Rounding the corner, this smiling face kind of just jumped out at me.

Looked up on my way to the Logan Blue Line stop yesterday, and spotted this large, blank space. To me, it was screaming for someone to show up and tag the thing.
I don’t know what it is with me and my fascination with birds – particularly when I’m on my way to work. Maybe it’s due to the fact that I’m just waking up, imagining everyone (and thing) else is also just starting out their day.
Spotted this in the alley, on the way to work this morning.
Spotted near Jackson and Federal, on the way in to work this morning.
Last Thursday, I noticed these strange… things, set up along the sidewalk near State and Monroe. At first glance, I thought they were lights of some kind – tall stalks with pill-shaped lightbulbs at the tips.
I learned his name was Alex, and that he was a student. He told me the device was something he made for his “Real-Time Systems Class.” It was something that allowed him to manipulate audio and video. He mentioned a few more technical things, which I didn’t quite remember.
I noticed the top of the box had a picture of an old Sega… and so I asked if the insides were made from an old console.
I spotted this box of old VHS tapes in the alleyway, behind my apartment. On walking by, I was struck by the fact that all the tapes looked to be in pretty good (if not great) condition. I paused and debated briefly snatching them up, only to remember that I don’t own a VHS player. Even if I wanted these tapes, I would have no way to actually view them.
Most days, as I’m walking to and from work, I’ll glance up at the very large Illinois Centennial Monument that sits at the heart of Logan Square. For whatever reason, the nerd in me giggles whenever I see a pigeon on the monument – a small bird, sitting on top of a larger bird. I don’t know why it tickles me so much, but it does.
On my way to work this morning, I took out the trash and walked through the alleyway that runs somewhat parallel to Logan Boulevard. Near the end, where it meets up with the alley that runs along Milwaukee… I spotted this odd note, spray-painted into the ground.
It’s been well over a year since I first saw this, and I’m amazed that it’s still around. Although… it does look like someone tried to remove it, recently, given all the scraps on the ground. The original peice was pretty neat.
Every day, on the way in to work, I pass by a series of silhouettes near the Logan Square Blue Line stop. They’re situated along the wall, and I usually catch them out of the corner of my eye.
One of the benefits of having your spouse work near where you work: taking the same route together in the mornings. Most days, Liz and I are on the Blue Line downtown, and we part ways at State and Jackson. Today, she gave me a call letting me know there was some kind of promotional stunt happening near Wabash and…
Spotted this small gathering of birds on the way to work yesterday morning. I’ve seen two birds on the statue before, but this was my first glimpse of a group of them (six in total). Specifically, they are perched atop the Illinois Centennial Monument. But for my money, it’s six birds sitting on a giant eagle. I wonder if the…
Spotted this woman walking around Logan Square yesterday. I’m not sure of the actual purpose of her umbrella hat. If it was meant to block the sun, that made sense… but there were a ton of clouds out, and the entire sky was a blanket of gray. If it was meant to prevent against rain, it would protect her head……
