Basement Stairs!
Over the last week or so, Liz and I got pretty good at walking up the risers. But this is so much better.
Over the last week or so, Liz and I got pretty good at walking up the risers. But this is so much better.
Liz continued work on the basement treads tonight, applying a first round of varnish. Since she was all about this task, I ended up taking on some of the outside/garden duties, and watered the back garden boxes, and all the plants along the fence and in the front yard.
Though we ran into problems staining the basement steps, Bob came over today while we were at work… and using new boards, re-cut all the treads (using the old ones as guides).
We gave ourselves a cutoff of 2:00 PM. But we kept on working a bit longer, and wound up going through all ten bags of mulch I had picked up.
Liz is handling the more involved staining process, given her extensive experience. It involves first using a sanding sealer, then the stain, then a few coats of varnish.
Bob was at our place today for a super long time, arriving around 1PM and leaving around 9:30 PM. Liz and I came home to find all the treads cut and in place – allowing us to walk up/down the stairs!
Today was a big work day, as Bob and Julie came over for an early start. While Bob was working in the basement, Liz and Julie were working in the yard to get a head start (before the heat got too strong).
The whole time we were outside, the sky looked like it was going to start pouring rain. Luckily for us, the weather reports held true and we were able to work without a drop. The dark skies did add a little urgency while we worked though, as it felt like we were always racing the rain.
After mowing, I decided I was going to use the power washer Bob loaned us (for the basement) on our front and back porches.
Today, Liz and I spent some time in the basement with a bit of drywall work. While Bob is helping to build our stairs, we’re trying to do some of the in-between work. Our task today: add some drywall, and start to build out one of the walls for the stairs.
Today was a yard day, with Liz working on weeding and planting in the front yard and me mowing the lawn in back.
As I progressed, I found a few more piles. And a bit more. By the time I got done with the backyard, I felt pretty beat… and hadn’t even started with the actual removal of all the house stuff yet!
Made a big push today, and got the rest of the guest room floors up. With much of the ancillary side work out of the way, all that’s left was to just power through getting the remaining floorboards removed.
Ultimately, I went downstairs and stole the string lights from the basement. Then, I slowly installed the old set while slowly removing the one I had just put in. Two times the fun.
Mostly a cleanup day today. I spent a lot of time taking out nails from the wall studs I removed. A kind of slow process that was slower and more labor intensive than I expected.
