After talking between ourselves, and in conference with Bob, we’re refocusing on the second floor as our next area to address. But before that can happen, we need to finish up the basement first so we have a place to move all the stuff that’s currently on the second floor.
The big goal is to move things out of this area, over into the area where we finished painting. Once cleared, we can continue our work with the paint and get all the walls.
Tippi has been kind of clinging on, half browned and half green. We’ve tried to water her when we can, but she’s suffered a lot these past few months in her little pot. We decided that today would be the day we put her in the ground.
From our cleaning session a few weeks ago, we decided we needed to give our piano away. When we closed on the house, we elected to keep it… and it’s been sitting, unplayed but litered good intentions, for some time now.
After work on Tuesday, Liz and I decided to roll up our sleeves for some time in the backyard. Though we were sluggish after the long weekend off, today was going to be cooler than the rest of the week… so we decided to work.
Liz has had a brick walkway in mind for some time now – partly as a decorative element, and partly as a means or people to walk through the parkway without stepping on our plants.

They were the company that first removed our trees, and we had asked them back to grind down the stump near where the new fence was going in.
It’s still amazing to me that this area was once overrun with day lillies, and that it’s been transformed into a real yard again.
Similar to what they did for our front yard, Liz came home with an assortment of things for us to plant along our new fence.
As a contrast to Bob’s computer schematics, Liz had her own map (of future backyard plans). I suspect there’s more in store for us in the back, now that we have a new fence back there.
With coffee in hand, Liz and I started off the day by going into the backyard and completing the final garden box. We began things in March, and what was supposed to be a weekend project has taken us… more like two months, versus two days.
It is… enormous! It feels massive, and weird, and awesome. There’s a part of me that feels like I’ve just snubbed our neighbors in a very big way, but there’s another part of me that feels like we’ve taken a big step into turning our backyard into a private little retreat.
Today, the actual installation! Every crew we spoke with was really great (incredibly polite and very attentive to all our questions). These two guys told us that the process itself was pretty quick, once everything was in place.
Today, the first part of our new fence was installed. Two guys came by to pour the concrete and set up the posts – and we arrived home to find a rough outline of where our new fence would be.
