Productive Day at the House

Liz, finishing up the final round of varnish on the woodwork in the dining room. After today, we’re ready to move out of this room and onto the others… clearing space for us turning the dining room into our makeshift kitchen, for the next few several months.

Demo Between the Bedrooms

Brief night at the house. While Bob was working in the basement, I was upstairs clearing out an area he had marked for the furnace room (which will be situated between the two bedrooms).

New Ductwork Begins

At the house yesterday, Bob got some additional ductwork started. This is a ‘T’ that will split from the furnace, with one half pointing towards the back of the house and the other towards the front.

Building the First Boot

Bob picked up a new AC coil today – though it’s still pretty chilly out, the AC components also end up getting installed as part of the process. Air conditioning isn’t something we’re really thinking about at the tail end of winter, but this will be nice to have once the weather gets warmer. If it ever gets warmer.

Stop! Hammertime…

Worked on the house a bit tonight, and was trying to take apart a doorframe to one of the closets, upstairs. Guess I don’t know my own strength.

Adding Support to a Floor Joist in the Basement

One of the floor joists was cut by the prior owner, and it was kind of just hanging there – not really providing much support at all, and leaving the other nearby joist to take on a majority of the weight. As a result, the floor was bowing a little bit.

New Lights in the Basement

Got some new (temporary) lights in the basement set up. It’s a kind of strange thing, to be able to see so much more now, after having worked in the dark a bit down here for so long.

Sealing Off the Risers

A view of all the risers, coming up from the basement. We’ve got PVC pipes for condensate (one for the furnace, and another that’s for an overflow pan that hopefully will never see a drop of water). We’ve also got conduit for electrical, refrigerant lines for the AC, and an extra PVC pipe for any miscellaneous wires that we might need in the future (like cable).

Demo Day: Opening Up the Office Walls

Amazingly, I got all of this done in a few hours. With each demo session I’ve done, I’ve gotten more confident and have begun to work much faster. I’m no longer being timid with the plaster (though I slow down a bit, as I try to pull some of it directly into the trash can). And I spend a bit of time cleaning up the plaster, before moving on…

Measuring Between Rooms

Originally, we were going to resize the bedrooms and make them a bit smaller (but equal). With some additional discussion today, we decided to make the master bedroom a little larger… and to make the adjacent bedroom (the guest bedroom) a little smaller.

Solo Demo Run

This was maybe an hour, maybe a little less. I ended up filling three heavy duty bags with plaster in clearing this section out. I say “filled,” but really I mean filled to the point where I could mostly still move the bag. The plaster is heavy, and the bags are maybe 1/4 to 1/3 full.
