After a recent visit to the vet, Liz and I found out that our rabbits needed a bit more medication, day to day. Quincy has some liver issues (high liver levels, which suggest an infection), and was also diagnosed as being anemic. Baxter was developing some mats of fur under her chin, and the doctor suggested some pain medication (thinking…

Not sure if it’s the music or the slow motion, or a little of both… but I find this video calming and a little mesmerizing. Created by Marc Newson for Ikepod, these pieces look incredibly lush. I have no practical use for either the 10 or 60 minute hourglasses, but I’d still like one. Much like the Kiva Ford video,…

John Randolph is better known as Jay Smooth, and has been host of the Underground Railroad show on WBAI since 1991. I just found out about him yesterday, and have been watching his numerous video posts on YouTube. I have to say – I love listening to this guy talk. He’s incredibly articulate, incredibly funny… and is someone I would…

Between September and November, the male Peacock spider performs a fascinating courtship ritual using its incredibly colorful abdomen. In addition to waving his legs, the male Peacock spider will also expand a pair of colorful flaps that are reminiscent of its namesake (3:02). I’m normally ok around spiders. They freak me about as much as the next person, but whenever…

Kiva Ford is a scientific glass-maker by day, and an artistic glass-maker by night. And since he’s also able to juggle flaming sticks (he used to be a professional juggler), he’s pretty much awesome all day long. The objects are beautifully made, and the whole mini-doc is beautifully shot. If you’d like to learn more about Ford and his work,…

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s incredible journey as the first human being to make it to outer space. While folks all over the world may be celebrating Yuri’s Night, you can share in the celebration by checking out First Orbit. Combining footage shot from the International Space Station with the music of composer Philip Sheppard, Gargarin’s voice…

Depsite the fact that this is a commercial for some kind of cellphone or cellphone case… it’s still a cool thing to watch. Reading over some of the BB comments, I’d like to stick in the camp that hopes this was entirely for real, and not a product of fancy CGI. I think this is a lovely bit of music…

This is precisely why I would never, EVER put a snake around my neck. This is terrible… but is it wrong of me to feel that the kid got what was coming to him for disobeying the snake handler? *shudder* [via teachingsagittarian] Related:Wedding Reception Recon: Lincoln Park And The Notebaert Museum

A few weeks ago, my friend Justin Siddons attended a Bulls Game at the United Center. It was a random thing he happened to mention on Twitter. They were good seats, courtside, and he was excited. Shortly after the game… I spotted this post on Facebook. Our friend Utopia commented that Justin had been spotted on the Jumbotron, dancing. In…

Once upon a time in Ko Panyi, a floating fishing village in Thailand, some kids decided they would like to play football. They had watched it often on TV, but never tried playing themselves. Their solution? Build a field out of wood and nails. This is their story. Very cute and quite touching, this is a really well made little…

This street-level footage of the 2011 tsunami hitting Japan is difficult to describe. Like many others, I’ve seen a lot of clips on the news showing boats being pushed up aginst bridges and buildings. Cars in the water. But in my opinion, this video fully captures just how badly Japan was hit. I knew tsunamis were destructive, but until I…

Ron Pace runs Canyon Crest K9 Training Center, in Tacoma, WA. During a regular training session with a boxer, the dog collapsed suddenly and stopped breathing. Pace immediately jumped into action, and was able to resuscitate the animal using CPR, with the entire event captured on video. Warning: I have to say, I debated posting this video on the blog….
