Zilch: Addictive Skill/Luck Game with Dice
Zilch is a pretty addictive, dice-based game of skill and luck. It took me a little while to really get a hang of the rules, but it’s pretty much something like this:
You can score points a few ways, primarily by rolling a 1 (100 points) or a 5 (50 points). If you roll three of a kinds, you also get points (three 4’s equal 400 points, three 5’s equal 500 points, and so on).
After each turn, you must “take” some points. You cannot “bank” any points until you take at least 300. So you pretty much have to keep trying to push things, if you aren’t scoring well.
If, on a roll, you get no scoring dice at all… you lose any points that aren’t banked, and you get a “zilch.” Get three of those “zilches” in a row, and you lose 500 points.
The scoring took a good while for me to get… but I’m finding myself really getting into the game, now that I understand the rules a bit better. Overall, you just find yourself trying to figure out whether you want to play it safe and “bank” points… or whether you want to keep pushing, to try to gain more points.
If you want an easy way to kill 7 minutes, this is the game for you. [via MetaFilter]
