Kerbal Space Program
A week or so ago, I happened across this xkcd comic and learned about Kerbal Space Program. I’d seen the game around before, but didn’t really check it out until recently.
In a nutshell, KSP looks to be a kind of open sandbox where you’re trying to build a fully functioning space program from scratch. This includes hiring and training astronauts, building a functional rocket, and actually going out and exploring new planets/moons.
So far, it sounds like KSP is still under development (and has been so for a few years). But there are demos of the game that you can download for free. Which I’m totally doing as we speak.
Currently, the game is set up as an open sandbox with no specific rules or objectives in the traditional sense of a “game.” But future versions look like they’ll have a more structured model. The demo version will be free to play forever, but won’t receive any of the ongoing updates.
The game’s going for around $23 as of right now, which seems a little on the steep side compared to other Steam games I’ve seen. But given the scale and scope of the game, seems worth it. Going to give the demo a whirl and we’ll see – looks to be a lot of fun.
Looking at the screenshots and gameplay, the Kerbals look like a cross between Lemmings and Minions. That right there might be worth the purchase price alone.
