Lean on Me

Saw this on my walk to lunch yesterday, and was immediately struck by a wave of sadness.

The crutch itself looked super small, the size more appropriate for a child. Perhaps someone forgot it, but… that’s not something you just forget, much less forget out on the street like that.

Did someone get moved along, unexpectedly? Moved against their will? Did someone get even more hurt?

After a while though, I started to wonder if seeing this wasn’t some kind of litmus test. Maybe someone suddenly got better? Maybe someone finally decided they no longer needed the crutch, and left it as a sign of their recovery/autonomy?

Ultimately though, I couldn’t shake the negative outlook, the bad news story. Something unpleasant happened, glass half empty. Crutches half forgotten.

  1. How funny – all I see when I see this lonesome crutch is positive. :) Someone didn’t need it anymore and was sooo happy to be done using it & just left it.
