Went in to work again today, around 11AM. I was struggling more with my Flash navigation for our Content Management System (hereafter known as The Mothership). I’ve been working on this thing for a long while, and kept banging my head against what has turned into some fairly involved AS code.

All afternoon, I kept testing and testing. Locally, things worked like a peach. However, when I uploaded the nav and tried it out there… it would fail once every five or six times. I kept testing and testing, and could never really get it to fail locally.

Justin kept trying to get me to leave, but I was being stubborn and was starting to get freaked out about not having this thing done in time for our trip. Lo and behold, about an hour later… I figure out what was going wrong.

Basically, I’m pulling in XML to populate the navigation. When testing locally, it accessed the XML fairly immediately but online… there was a bit of a lag. I had a check to make sure the XML was fully loaded before proceeding, but my check was flawed.

Instead of using prevFrame(), I only had prevFrame.

That’s right. I lost like 3 hours because I was looking everywhere else expect this stupid ass frame. Essentially, my XML check wasn’t working correctly, and the timeline advanced to a point where the nav was trying to populate things… without all the necessary data. Three hours to a pair of parentheses. Fuck.

On the plus side, I’ll never make that freaking mistake again.

After I got everything sussed out, I left work feeling pretty good. As far as I can tell, my nav is back to its original form and slick as a whistle again. I think everything’s good to go, regarding what I need to have finished. Depending on how tomorrow goes, I may slip out of work early and get some shopping done.

Went over to Stu and Juliet’s place, and hung out there for a long while with Justin. We chatted about movies and TV, and ended up watching some WB spinoff to American Idol (where the singers are bad, but everyone on the show pretends they’re good and merely encourage them). It’s a horrible show and what they’re doing to these people is awful, but I spent an hour just watching the horribleness.

Slow day today, as all I’ve really done is work.
