Running Sounds

This is a terrible photo, I realize. But wanted to document the pair of headphones that I landed on (after finally deciding to get something wireless for running).

I originally got a pair of Shokz headphones, which were fancy ones that used “bone conduction” to allow you to listen to audio, without plugging up your ears.

While I’m out running, I think it’s safer to be able to hear your surroundings (cars, other people nearby like runners or bicyclists). I do tend to like an immersive set of headphones, but found that while running… being able to hear around me feels more comfortable.

I tried out a pair of headphones from Cleer (the Arc II Sport in particular), and ended up going with these. They fit over your ears, but not inside your ears. And it’s like a tiny little speaker just outside your ear.

I didn’t think I’d like this, but actually don’t mind it. The first few minutes it felt like the thing might slip right off… but in all the running I’ve done, it hasn’t budged. The only time it’s fallen off was due to me being clumsy when taking one off my ear.

I liked the concept of the Shokz headphones. But the sound quality was muted to me, and not really worth the price.

Similar to my reticence to actually get a decent pair of running shoes… I held off on headphones for a long time, choosing instead to use a set of wired headphones. Can’t believe I went for so long without these, as they definitely make running feel a lot less unencumbered.
