A Little History

UltraCrib is a cool little project, specifically for me because it was one of the first Flash projects I helped out on, back when I was a freelancer. I was brought on to help with a big multi-site migration project, and Rey tapped me for some Flash work. From there, I’ve been able to do more and more fancy Flashy stuff. The first UltraCrib was rather meager and chunky in hindsite, but it did help me get my foot in the door.

I’ve always known how important it is to have an integrated strategy when promoting and marketing products. But it wasn’t until I worked at Q101 that I saw a really intensive (and, in my opinion, effective) execution of this, in the flesh. Ben and I would work on making the UltaCrib site, and afterwards I’d hear numerous on-air spots where the station jocks would be plugging the event, telling everyone to visit the website to register. And then, once they visited the site to register, they’d go back to the station to listen for their name to be called. All in all, I was pretty excited to be part of this type of thing, to know and see the work I was doing add to a promotion.

Typically, the projects that come through are of the "Hey, can you make this for us" sort of deal. Sometimes there’s thanks, which is nice. But often, once we build something and let it go… we never really hear how things turn out. Being abel to see the culmination of things is really a nice bonus, and a big part of why I wanted to attend this giveaway.

The other reasons? Well, at work the Emmis Interactive group is fairly cut off from the rest of the office. While we work in the same place, we’re technically not a part of Q101. Our office is sort of tucked away in the back, and we tend to be off in our own little world. I like the folks that work at Q101, and I need to be more social. It’s hard because well… physically, we’re separated from them. But a lot of folks (Phil, Anthony, Joe) will come back and visit us… and it’s something I need to reciprocate. If you’ve read any of this blog, you can infer that I’m not the most extroverted guy in the world. But as far as the people I work with, I’d like to try being a bit more extroverted. A small step towards that goal was attending last night’s event. And on top of everything else, I like Q101. I may not care a great deal of the music, but I care about the station, the people that work there, and I want it to be successful. Even though I don’t work for the station, it has my personal investment.

And yes, you are another reason. Seriously. A small factor was wanting to provide closure for the contest, since I talked about it and mentioned the door. It seemed like a responsible thing to do, since I am managing this blog and all.
Besides, part of this blog was meant to get me out of the house every once in a while. :)
