Winterizing
After work, I stopped off at Home Depot with Justin. I was running late this morning and figured, what the hell… and drove in to work. I’ve been meaning to insulate the apartment a bit more, as this place just seems to bleed heat.
So: Home Depot, and a few of those interior window Saran-Wrap dealies.
I loathe this sort of thing, but it needs to be done. My heat has been going pretty nonstop lately, and the more I can do to lessen the heating bill (Chicago winters, people), the better.
What’s unfortunate is that I got an invite from Gretchen, as she was having people over to her new place (she’s taken over Stu’s apartment) and was going to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas and drink whiskey. I was tempted to go, but decided to stay home and do this apartment stuff instead.
Two days back, I hung out with Justin at Artful Dodger. Last night, we had our Emmis Interactive holiday dinner. Tomorrow, I’ve got several parties/events to attend, and it looks to be a pretty social evening. I just didn’t have the social energy in me to go out again tonight. And while I wanted to stay home, all I really wanted was to loaf around a bit.
But instead, I got to caulking up some of the windows and applying that plasticwrap to the living room windows.
Sometime at Home Depot, I remembered that I had thrown out my old hairdryer. But thanks to Justin, I was able to borrow his for the night. Part of the process in sealing up windows involves applying the hair dryer to the plastic, to ensure that it “sticks.”
And I gotta tell you – I must have done something seriously wrong last year. That, or my old hair dryer was shittier than I realized. Because tonight, after a few passes, the plastic sealed right up – tight against the window frames.
I was really surprised. Maybe this winter, my apartment might not be an icebox after all. And maybe I won’t spend a fortune on heating bills!
