Hello, Metafilter!

Ok. This one wasn’t purely by chance. I signed on to Metafilter a while ago, back when I first launched the 3 Years 3 Minutes project. My goal was to hopefully drum up some interest/traffic, and see if people found it worthy enough to link/share.

Yesterday, I wrote in to ask if I could post something I created (and do the self-promotion thing), and was told about the MetaFilter Projects section of the site. It’s a pretty cool concept/area, as each member can only post one item there per month.

Shortly after my post appeared in the Projects section, somebody posted it in the main MetaFilter area. Awesome!

It’s a bit depressing to see all the rather negative comments, but whatever. I’m no longer surprised when folks move immediately into critique mode, and point out everything they think is wrong.

In particular, I like how some folks seem to think I’ve used too many images, and others have labelled me an “amateur” for only having taken 11,000 over a three year period. I guess you can’t make everyone happy.

Good or bad, I wanted to share this project. And today, it made its way to a lot of screens. Some folks really seemed to like it, other folks seemed to really not like it. So it goes.

At the end of the day, the 3 Years 3 Minutes project began like any of the other experiments I’ve made – an itch, a compulsion that sort of just pulled me along until the thing got done. I made it because I just couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I’m pretty proud of the thing, actually. And at the end of it all, that’s what really matters. It’s a nice bonus to hear that a few other folks liked it too.
