Overheard

This morning, while getting my coffee, I overheard a woman talking about taking her kid to the zoo. She said how they’ve gone once or twice, but each time her boy was constantly afraid of the animals, afraid that they would “get” him.

I laughed to myself hearing this, remembering back to a time when animals filled me with a sense of awe and wonder.

A darker side of my brain began to think about zoos, and about growing old. I couldn’t help wondering: do we, as adults, lose our fascination with animals, with nature? Or is it that as we get older, we place more confidence in our skills, and in the cages we build?
