More Movable Type
Spent today working on building out a site for Gretchen and Genie. It’s called Literago, and is a bit of an amalgam of the words “Literate Chicago.”
The idea for the site is one that combines multiple threads: it’s a calendar of literary events, an ongoing collection of essays about all things literary and Chicago, updated bulletins about things going on in the literary world at large. And most importantly, Literago will be reviewing readings – which so far is not something anybody’s really done.
Of all the events in Chicago, which ones are entertaining? Which ones have people not heard about? What authors are a must-see, and which ones should you avoid?
It’ll be interesting to watch the content grow. I think it’s a pretty neat idea, and I’m excited to be a part of ramp-up, prior to their launch.
Today, I’m learning a bit more about Movable Type. While I just got done working with it for my blog, I’m now discovering how multiple “blogs” can be created, and combined in such a way as to build a fairly rich site.
Each of the Literago sections (Reviews, Essays, Bulletins, Calendars) are all separate “blogs” under Movable Type. But by exporting out snippets from each, I’m able to piece stuff together through a series of php includes.
Today was interesting. A little frustrating at times, but it felt good. A bit like solving a puzzle without using your hands, if that makes any sense.
I’m excited to say that we’re about a day ahead of schedule, and I’m close to turning over the layout to a designer. It’s been a pretty cool process so far. Right now, it’s cool to think that I could build out sites like this (or like GapersBlock), if I wanted to.

You’re a genius and you’re getting my firstborn for all your work on this. Literago is going to take over the world.
