Brian Dettmer, Book Artist: Upcoming Show at Packer Schopf Gallery

I happened to see that BoingBoing mentioned Brian Dettmer recently, an artist who does a lot of great stuff with books/paper. The post also mentions that he’s going to have some work displayed, right here in Chicago at the Packer Schopf Gallery next month (April 3 – May 9).

Liz and I happened to be able to catch some of Dettmer’s work back in 2007, when he had his work on display at the Hyde Park Art Center. After seeing his stuff online, it was great to be able to get in really, really close and check out some of the details firsthand.

And while we’re on the topic of artists who work with paper, make sure to check out some of Jen Stark’s work. I happened across both artists first online, and eventually got to see their work in person. So everytime I hear Dettmer’s name, I always end up thinking about Stark (and vice versa).

  1. Wow. Thanks so much for posting this (great blog, by the way). I could look at these two artists’ work for hours. And damn, I wish I had found all of those “costume” papers that you found in the back hallway. No way would I have been able to leave them there. My mind is reeling with the number of projects and displays that could be created with those pieces. I am deeply impressed (and a little depressed) at the fact that you were able to leave them there.Keep writing. Some of us are eager to read more!

  2. Trust me – leaving those fantastic drawings behind was really tough. Despite the fact that they were clearly “trash,” it would have felt like a theft just taking them. But I am totally with you – I could have spent a long while just looking through all those sketches.
