Six Degrees of Black Sabbath: Finding Hidden Paths Between Disparate Artists
Came across another great Echo Nest project by Paul Lamere entitled Six Degrees of Black Sabbath. It’s based off of the popular Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game, and attempts to find the links between two musical artists in the fewest number of steps.
In the above image, the project found a path between Frank Sinatra and GWAR in 6 steps. Not too shabby!
I love the work that Lamere does, and seeing Echo Nest projects like this always get my creative energies going – thinking about data, and all the different ways we can consume it, work with it, re-shape it. Really fun stuff. Check out the project’s About page, as well as Lamere’s blog post for a more in-depth look at how things work, under the hood.
//Edit: In searching my blog for related content, I came across an old Flash experiment involving Ben, a pair of Incredible Hulk Gloves, and GWAR. Not super related beyond the mention of GWAR, but on finding this little Flash guy again after so many years… I couldn’t help but link to it again.

The game I’m playing is trying to find paths that involve the most steps. So far the best I’ve done is 14: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to Mississippi John Hurt.
