Receiving a Card and Stickers from Product Hunt

Last Friday, I arrived home to find a nice surprise: a letter from Product Hunt!

They were sending out letters to all the various companies/sites that had been featured, and I was fortunate enough to be part of that group. My Underviewed.com site, which showcases YouTube videos that contain generic filenames as their titles, got mentioned on the site about six months ago.

For those not familiar with Product Hunt, it’s a daily, community-curated site listing new products/services/websites that are voted on by others. The products it features tends to skew towards the tech side of things, but that’s a big part of its popularity I think – as its primary audience tends to skew that way as well.

Since 2014, the site has gotten a lot of attention. And it’s now become part of my daily routine, as it’s something I check pretty much right when I get in to work. PH is one of those sites where the things you see… you’ll likely encounter them again in a few hours, or a day later, trending on Twitter or Facebook.

Got a nice written note, along with some stickers! I’d be curious if they ended up using Felt Pro, or one of the other custom/handwritten services that have been featured on the site.

Assuming they average around 30 products a day, this is no small amount of money they’re spending on promotion. I know they do stand to benefit from this kind of thing (because hey, I’m sure I’m not the only one writing blog posts about this) – but the gesture still feels like a personal touch. The folks at PH didn’t need to send out all these letters and stickers to everyone – but it was made nicer precisely because it wasn’t something they needed to do.

In addition to feeling like I have extra Internet Street Cred, I like the fact that I’m getting lumped in with other “makers.” And I’m particularly tickled that they suggest I share the stickers with my “team,” since my project was just a one-person deal. It feels really nice knowing that something I did on my own got billing alongside products and services that have large teams around them.

And also? No way I’m sharing these stickers.

A closeup view of the stickers. This was a really fun surprise to receive, and made me feel as though I were a part of things, even if I’m not a startup in San Francisco.

Really glad my Underviewed site got a little time in the spotlight. And now… on to the next project.
