The Follower

The Follower is a great combination of open cameras, social media, and digital voyeurism. It takes publicly available camera data, Instagram photo data, and produces a snapshot of when a particular Instagram photo was taken.

The results are really quite something.

I’m not quite sure how this is considered “AI,” in that it seems like it’s more about parsing through a lot of data looking at specific timestamps. Maybe there’s facial recognition sorcery involved.

Still, it’s amazing (and more than a little disconcerting) to see the Instagram photo, side by side with video of how/when it was taken.

Interesting discovery: this project is by Dries Depoorter, the same person who created Die With Me (an app that you can only use when your battery life is 5% or less).

And as a parting bit of meta fun: you can follow Dries on Instagram.
