Middlesex
I’ve been trying to read the most recent novel by Jeffrey Eugenides, called Middlesex. Been trying to read it off and on, and it hasn’t really grabbed me yet. But I’m only a few pages in, and have been hovering at the point where I’m re-reading the beginning, worried I’m missing something.
I absolutely loved his first novel, The Virgin Suicides. I’ve read that damn book three times now? Maybe more? I was never a big fan of the movie – it was ok. But Sofia Coppola’s interpretation was very different from what I saw in my head. I always thought of "The Virgin Suicides" as being an incredibly male book, with a narrator that’s this weird collective group of boys/men, looking back on their lives.
I hope Middlesex turns out to be good. I really do. I’ve been waiting for another book from Eugenides for a long, long time now. I think I went so far, back when I was an undergrad, as to track down a few short stories he wrote. But it’s been many years. I’ll keep you posted.
