GMail

I got an official invite to Gmail today. Much thanks to epohs, who offered on twelvestone to hook folks up.
While I’ve heard a lot of the hype, I’m not entirely sure why everyone is so freaking excited about free mail service. Sure, you get a gig of storage… I guess that’s exciting. Sorta.
Many folks have surmised that, with the added storage, it’s added information that google can use to better identify you as a consumer. I’ll be checking out some of the features, and looking into what makes this whole Gmail thing so damn popular.
From a marketing standpoint, it seems pretty solid. So far, I don’t think people can actually just sign up for an account. There’s this whole “invitation” deal, where someone has to officially invite you in before you can get an account. I’m not sure if this is part of a beta test, or if it’s simply a smart attempt to create some sort of exclusivity buzz. Comparable to Friendster, to some degree.
We’ll see.
