Emmis Interactive: Quarterly (Potluck) Meeting – 2008

Today at work we had one of our Quarterly Meetings. In addition to both Rey and Deb giving updates as to the status of the overall company, a lot of the managers highlighted the accomplishments their teams had over the past year.
It’s pretty crazy how much we’ve done in the past year. Putting everything up on the screen together, it’s an impressive list of accomplishments, all in all.
During our day to day, many of us focus on how we improve our product overall. How do we streamline our process? How do we become more efficient? How can we provide better service? We tend to fixate on the things that aren’t going right, and try to come up with ways to make things better.
With that particular mindset, it’s easy to lose sight of all the things that we do right, to gloss over all the achievements and milestones. Today during our meeting, it was a pretty great reminder of just all that we’ve done over the past year together.

Even down in the basement meeting rooms, the Affiliate Relations team brought their Bat Phone with them. Several laptops were set up, to ensure we could provide support even though we were in a company-wide meeting.

Did I mention our meeting was also a pot luck?

SO much good food. Actually, I have to confess this: I was very nervous, prior to my portion of the presentation. I ate a bit, but it really wasn’t all that much food. I spent a lot of time sipping on a Coke and reviewing my notes.
In addition to the food, Sean brought in his famous Plum Pudding with Flaming Brandy. The flames aren’t all that visible below, but the crowd reaction was pretty great:

Phil, checking the Affiliate Relations voice mail, to see if anyone’s called with a question/problem.
Far and away the very best presentation was Ben’s. Though it’s funny and silly, Ben and the Product Team do an incredible amount of work, and really are one of the driving forces shaping where our company (and our products) are headed.
He could have easily done a presentation chock full of stats and data, had he wanted. But in hindsight, I’m glad he didn’t. The meeting was going on a bit long, due to all the presentations. And Ben’s part of the presentation was just the right thing at just the right time.
At the tail end of the meeting, a new internal contest was announced. Suffice it to say it’s an “embarassing photos” contest, and it’s going to be freaking spectacular. While we have The Pingmaster Trophy and The Lord and Master Stein™, this new contest looks to be even better. I can’t wait to learn more, and can’t wait to post some of the photos/results once the competition goes into full swing.
