Free Copy of Portal Game (PC and Mac)

From today until May 24th, you can download a free copy of Portal (for both the PC or Mac). Created by Valve, the game is a series of puzzles that you must complete, using a gun that lets you create portals from one place to another.

It’s gotten a lot of praise, from both gamers and reviewers alike, and won lots of “Game of the Year” awards when it came out in 2007. And now it’s available for you to grab, free of charge.

The catch? You have to download and install Steam on your machine – the app developed by Valve to distribute games digitally/online. My sense is that Valve is doing this to increase its reach of people who have Steam installed, banking on the fact that you’ll likely buy another game from them sometime in the future. Also, it looks like Portal 2 is due out sometime this year as well.

This may or may not be a deal breaker for you. But it’s a great game, and well worth the download if you’re ok with the terms. As a side note, the overall download size is around 3.6 gigs, so be prepared for a bit of a wait.
