Pixar’s Amazing 3D Zoetrope

A Zoetrope is a device that simulates animation through a series of still images. Traditional zoetropes used two-dimensional images, typically spun in a circle and with a person looking through the slits.

I found out yesterday about the amazing 3D zoetrope at Pixar (which was inspired by one created at Studio Ghibli). Absolutely mesmerizing.

In doing more searches online, I’m finding tons of neat stuff. For example: a “making of” video with Sony creating the world’s largest zoetrope.

And you know what? I just realized something. I love the fact that we’re now using video to share zoetropes.

  1. Leslie and I saw the Studio Ghibli zoetrope at the Ghibli museum when we were in Japan, and I was absolutely floored by it. I spent an awful lot of time watching it spin up and come to rest over and over again. There were so many subtle movements and animations in a relatively small display! They had a number of other cool displays that explained the mechanics of a film projector and film frames. The museum is an absolute must-see for travelers!
