(Unattended) Hyde Park Yard Sale

While we were back in Hyde Park over the weekend, we happened to spot a large number of items in a neighbor’s yard. Each item had a small post-it note, listing out the price. All the things for sale were set up in the yard, but no one was around to collect any money.

Near all the items was a small box, with a note asking people to leave money for anything they took.
The pessimist in me thinks that this is foolishness, and that people would simply walk away with the items for sale. Or that people would simply take money from the box (when we looked, here was nothing inside).
But the optimist in me says that this spoke more about the neighborhood, and the people that reside here. And that perhaps we could be more trusting… and believe in the better angels of our nature.
