Spartan

Over the weekend, I happened to catch the movie Spartan, with Val Kilmer. I got sucked in to the beginning of it rather quickly, and with each new situation… got more and more drawn in.

There were a lot of elements that were standard to action thrillers. But there were also a lot of unexpected twists/moves that deviated from what I was expecting from a standard thriller movie. The dialogue was really great, and it wasn’t until much later that I realized it was written by David Mamet (no wonder).

I really liked Val Kilmer in this role, and thought he did a great job. I was really taken with what Mamet did with the characters of Jackie Black and Curtis, and I think I’ll leave it at that. In terms of developing supporting characters in a movie, I was quite taken by surprise.

The movie is currently available via HBO. If you have a chance to see it, I’d recommend it.
