Veterans Day

I have been uneasy and troubled, ever since the election results came in. I have found it difficult to concentrate on the tasks in front of me, and my thoughts return to my worries and anxieties.
Since Tuesday night I’ve reflected on my concerns, my fears, my feelings of uncertainty about our country. About who we are, about what we will become.
Earlier this morning, I saw that today was Veterans day. And the thought struck me that for our nation’s veterans – the act of serving in our military is something that goes beyond the self. Service to our country is greater than the self.
I have been in my own head these past few days. And I suspect I’ll be there yet, for many more. As I think about myself and my worries, I’m reminded today that our veterans define themselves through something outside of the self.
I’m reminded today that the luxuries I’m afforded are a direct result of their efforts and dedication.
For a brief moment today, I’m trying to set myself to one side. To set my worries to one side. To the veterans who have served our country, let me take this opportunity to say, simply: thank you for your service.
