Scenes from the Road
I’ve done a lot of driving, these last two weeks. While on the road, I’d sometimes spot something strange or odd – and decided to snap a photo.
This first one was on the way to Indiana. At a distance I thought the truck was overloaded and hauling a ton of enormous sewer pipes.
My first thought was to get around this guy as quickly as possible, because the movies taught me that the straps were going to snap at any minute. And every single one of those things was going to be bouncing on the highway like basketballs.
On passing, it seemed that the material might have been something lighter. That the danger may have been lessened because these things were not as heavy as I first imagined.
But then I wondered – is that better or worse? If they were lighter, wouldn’t they create some significant bit of lift? At a high velocity, if these things were light as plastic, couldn’t that cause problems?
I found myself fascinated, as both the notion of a heavy and/or light bed of cargo seemed problematic either way.
At a far distance, these pipes looked like the business end of a rocket. For a short while, I imagined Wile E. Coyote as the driver.
Spotted this on 465, on my way back to Chicago. At first I thought a truck had jumped the incredibly high median. But on closer inspection of the photo, I’m not so sure now. Maybe the truck on the right is helping with the debris on the other side?
I had heard, a few hours before I left, that there was an overturned milk truck blocking traffic. Looking at how backed up things were on the other side, I’m glad I was on this side of the mess.
