Some Light Bedtime Reading

For someone who doesn’t like scary movies (due to her overactive imagination), I was surprised to see Liz reading a copy of The Walking Dead before bed last night.

A quick synopsis: Rick Grimes wakes to find the world overrun with zombies, and he does whatever necessary to ensure the safety and survival of his family/friends. It is by far one of the most visceral, brutal, and raw comics I’ve ever read.

At their heart, the stories are all about survival – what it means, and what it takes to see another day. There are some incredibly harrowing experiences that the characters go through, and one of the volumes (the one my lovely wife is reading in bed) had me feeling “disturbed” for over a day.

There have been twelve paperbacks that have come out, with the thirteeth having just come out last week (I’ve read through all of them, but Liz is catching up). As much fun as I’m making of her now, I’ll probably be reading Volume 13, alongside her tomorrow night.

Sweet dreams!

  1. Truth be told, this is one volume past the really distrubing one Felix is remembering. I read that one on the train, and I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough…

  2. Ben read the comic books and downloaded a few eps of the new AMC show too. Have you seen it? Now like Liz, I choose not to watch scary movies (or really anything more violent than, say, a bar brawl that results in no more than light bruising and scratches)… but I can say that it was the goriest show I’ve ever seen. I watched the first half between my fingers and finally turned to the side to listen to the remainder of the show! That said, I did find the storyline compelling. While I could not continue watching the show, I am thinking about reading the comics!

  3. I just started watching the show on AMC. I agree with Allison that it’s one of the goriest shows I’ve ever seen…but so good!
