Infinity Blade

I picked up a copy of Infinity Blade last week, and it’s easily the most addictive iPhone game I’ve purchased so far.

I heard rumblings about this game for a while now, as it’s made by Epic Games and utilizes the Unreal Engine. Here’s the trailer:

I was reminded about the game a few days before it was released, and I’ve been playing it nonstop ever since. I swear, there were a few times where I was sitting in front of my computer and ended up playing a few rounds on my iPhone. It got pretty addictive for me.

As with your standard RPG, the game features experience points and gold coins. The more fights you win, the more you can buy in terms of fancy swords, shields and armor. There’s a level system that also lets you master certain items, and in turn allows you to bump up your core attributes.

The only caveat I’ll throw out with this game: it gets a little repetitive. After a while, you’re going down the same paths and fighting the same opponents (albeit with some variations). That said… I played the game all the way through and didn’t mind much.

The graphics and backgrounds are so detailed and stunning, I was ok with the limited environment where the game took place. What’s nice is that an update is due out next week, which promises an additional (dungeon) level, new equipment, and a new opponent.

The real tease though, is the anticipated multiplayer mode. In addition to fighting the computer AI’s, supposedly we’ll be able to battle our friends (and strangers too, if we wanted to).

The app is a little pricey, clocking in at $5.99. But it’s well worth it, IMO… both for the game as it is now, to say nothing of the expected updates. There’s a reason Infinity Blade was voted Best iPhone Game of 2010 by IGN, and why Epic earned $1.6M in its first four days.

There really hasn’t ever been this kind of game before, in the iPhone. It should be interesting to see what kind of new games come out, now that the bar’s been set by Epic.
