How to Open and Prepare Dragonfruit

While at the store recently, Liz and I picked up something new to try out: Dragonfruit. I’d always seen these guys, from time to time, at the grocery store… but had no idea what they were like, or how to go about eating one. And actually… it’s remarkably easy.

Though there are a lot of ways you can go about it, we opted to just slice the fruit straight down the middle.

Notice that there’s no core or anything. Similar to an orange, the toughness resides on the outside while the whole of the interior is quite soft.

Using a spoon, scoop out the insides much like you would an avocado. Try to get as much of the fruit in one piece as you can.

From there, we cut up each half into small wedges/slices and ate them individually.

The consistency reminded me of a very ripe pear or kiwi. I’m not sure if it was the piece we got, but overall… there really wasn’t much taste at all. There may have been a slight bit of sweetness, but it was fairly bland to me. The seeds didn’t bother me too much (kiwi is a good point of comparison), but Liz really dislikes seeds of any kind… so she didn’t eat all that much.

Overall, an interesting experience. But the fruit itself was pretty expensive (I want to say we got it for something like $6). Not sure I’d try another one, anytime soon. The taste in and of itself didn’t make me want more, though I could imagine it would be nice mixed with other fruit, or as part of a smoothee.

For the record, I have zero interest in attempting a “second harvest” of the seeds.
