Odd Pod

Liz showed me this strange plant that she had spotted, on our walk home today. It’s in someone’s yard, and I can’t really tell if it’s a super overgrown weed, or if it’s something that was planted intentionally.

What I’m assuming are seed pods for the plant are like large, single quotation marks. On top of that, they seem to have these spiny protrusions along the exterior.

Doing a quick scan of Google Images doesn’t show a good match (though it does appear there are a surprisingly high number of plants that have “spiny pods”).

Maybe I’m wrong and these things don’t actually contain seeds, but are instead the flowers? But if that were the case, wouldn’t they have bloomed by now? I honestly have no idea.

  1. Quite cute!! Some sort of milkweed for attracting monarchs? Ugh, somehow you always lead me to worms of some sort. They look like they should have some sort of smelly flesh like durian in them… Shouldn’t be hungry but…

    • It could be fruit. But I was afraid to touch it…

  2. Milkweed! They are so pretty inside. I have been meaning to plant some for the kids, just so they can open up the pods… maybe next year!

    • I didn’t even think to search for pictures of what the pod looks like on the inside. Thanks, Allison!
