An Unexpected Sight

While we were outside today, walking around after work in the yard… Liz and I were both surprised to see an airplane in the sky.

That feels weird to write.

While we see our fair share of airplanes in the sky, it felt jarring to see this plane today. It wasn’t quite stranded-on-a-desert-island type of jarring, but sci-fi-movie jarring, if that makes sense.

I think a part of it has to do with the fact that we’re inside, most days. And the sheer image of the sky itself is, in some ways, jarring.

But Liz and I had the same reaction, seeing the airplane: “that’s so weird.” We wondered where it was going, if it was moving supplies to another city, or if there were even any people inside.

This was an odd moment, both of us outside in the yard, looking up at the sky. But nearly everything about the moment was a-typical, unusual, given that the world is being upended by the Coronavirus.

Like many of us now, like all of us now, the plane kept its distance. I watched it move slowly across the sky, further away, until it finally disappeared.
