Lewis Capaldi: Someone You Loved

While listening to the latest Passenger album, one song that caught my ear was “Someone You Loved.” It was a catchy tune, but it did seem a bit more “pop-like” in its lyrics than I was expecting from Passenger.

A thing I tend to do, if I like a song, is to search for live performances of it on YouTube. And that’s what I realized that the song was actually a cover, and was originally by Lewis Capaldi.

On first viewing, I thought the story was a kind of time travel thing, where the older man in the video was present day… and the couple was from an earlier time. When I realized they were different people, I thought “Oh, you bastards.”

I’m not one to get overly emotional with videos, but this one was perfectly designed to make you cry. You kind of know what’s going to happen because they’re setting everything up, and it still causes the waterworks.

Random side note: I said “older man,” but it’s actually Peter Capaldi (that’s Doctor Capaldi to some of you). Who, it turns out, is actually related to singer Lewis Capaldi.

In an odd turn, I ended up showing the video to Liz (and she got pretty teared up). I’m not sure why I did that. Kind of like wanting to share a song that’s stuck in your head with someone else, so that by infecting them with it the song might actually leave yours?

Having watched Capaldi’s quivering eyes and getting all mushy, I guess I needed to inflict that on someone else so I could move on.
