Kate Davis: All About That Bass

For Music League this week at work, the theme is “Covers that are Better than the Original.” It sent me down a rabbit hole, looking through a ton of cover songs both in my library and online.

I was hit with a bit of nostalgia, remembering the Onion’s AV Undercover series. And also the ridiculous amount of material from Postmodern Jukebox.

I ended up gravitating back to this one video: Kate Davis does this incredible cover of Meghan Trainor’s song “All About that Bass.”

The really interesting thing for me: I somehow managed to never hear the original version from Trainor. Instead, my first introduction to this song was Davis’ version. So it’s her voice and her take that I hear, whenever this song comes up.

I’ve long has this itch to create a WordPress site that only posts song covers. But the catch would be that every video shared would have to fall under a certain view count. I love how many covers are posted online, and the act of discovering new covers on YouTube is kind of a fun thing.

I don’t know if I’ve got the time/energy for this sort of project, but it’s stayed with me for a while now. One of these days I just need to pull the trigger. Setting up the site/domain isn’t the hard thing, it’s dedicating the time to research and find stuff to post up (I’d want it to be a daily thing).
