Marine Corps Marathon 2024, Day 2: Milk Bar, Jack Rose Dining Saloon

This trip to DC is really low key. We’ve been a few times before (in 2010, and later in 2016), and have seen some of the major sites.

But this time? We were mostly focused on the race, and mostly focused on just resting and relaxing before the race. No agendas, no to-do lists. Mostly just eating a little and napping a little, all before the race.

One bonus: just a few blocks north of our hotel was a physical Milk Bar store. Liz is a huge fan, and we stopped in for a little snack.

Late in the day, we took some scooters up to Jack Rose Dining Saloon. It’s been a while since we actually tried riding these things (last time we did this was during the 2023 Chicago Marathon). I was a little nervous at first, but got the swing of things fairly quickly.

Note: it seems like in DC, they speed limit these things to where every scooter is ridiculously slow. At this price point, it would have been cheaper to just get an Uber/Lyft.

We got the recommendation to visit Jack Rose through our friend Max, who worked as server here some time ago.

It’s hard to do this place justice. There are a ton of bottles, along every wall. And it’s quite the sight to behold.

We tried looking at the whisky list (it’s 72 pages long). While we had some favorite distilleries to look up, Liz and I soon gave up after a few minutes of searching.

The person helping us was Chris (the whisky advisor), someone Max recommended we speak with. A bit of serendipity there.

We gave Chris some general preferences, and the next thing we knew he was off and climbing up the ladder.

Our first two drams.

Closeup: Liz had a 14 year Aultmore from Adelphi. I had a 16 year Ben Nevis.

Our second round.

Detail: Liz had a Ben Nevis that she absolutely loved. I had an older Society bottle (76.94) – a 26 year old Mortlach!

We got to talk at length with Chris, which was really nice/fun. He’s a fountain of information, and had a ton to share about each of our bottles.

For dinner, we had reservations at Perry’s. It was close enough for us to walk, and we got there just before the big dinner rush.

Liz got a Japanese Fried Rice that she kept commenting on, days afterwards. I got to have a bit of sushi (which tends to be rare, since Liz doesn’t like the texture).

We didn’t do a lot of sight-seeing today, but boy did we eat some nice food. I could use more vacations like this.
